Three Historical National Days

Hungary has three national commemorative days that most European countries don't have an equivalent for:

• 15 March — Outbreak of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence. Crowds gather across Hungary wearing national cockades (nemzeti szalag); university students read aloud the 12-point demands of 1848.
• 20 August — Saint Stephen's Day (Staatsalapítás ünnepe), marking the founding of the Hungarian state by King Stephen I over a thousand years ago. Budapest hosts one of Central Europe's largest fireworks displays over the Danube.
• 23 October — The 1956 Hungarian Uprising against Soviet rule, also marking the proclamation of the Third Hungarian Republic in 1989.

The Workday Swap System (Munkaszüneti nap áthelyezése)

Hungary has a practice that surprises many foreigners: the government can declare a bridge Friday a public holiday, but employees must then work the following Saturday to compensate. This is legally mandated — not optional — and applies to all workers.

In 2026, Saint Stephen's Day falls on a Thursday (20 August). The government may designate Friday 21 August as an extra bridge holiday, with Saturday 22 August becoming a mandatory workday. Official decisions are usually announced in the previous year; confirm before making travel plans.

Hungary's Time Zone

Hungary observes Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) in winter and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) from the last Sunday of March through the last Sunday of October. Clocks go forward one hour in spring and back in autumn.

The UK is one hour behind Hungary all year. Germany, Austria, France, Italy and Spain share Hungary's time zone, so no adjustment is needed for meetings within Western and Central Europe.

What's Open on Public Holidays?

Government offices and schools close on all public holidays. Shops are generally closed on national holidays, though shopping centres may operate with reduced hours. Saint Stephen's Day (20 August) and Christmas are the most universally observed — expect almost everything to be shut on those days.

Brief Notes and Traditions

Saint Stephen's Day is Hungary's biggest national celebration. The Danube fireworks on the evening of 20 August draw hundreds of thousands of spectators to Budapest's riverbanks and bridges. On 15 March, Hungarians pin a red, white and green cockade (nemzeti szalag) to their clothes — a small but visible act of remembrance. The 23 October commemoration is more solemn: official ceremonies, candlelight marches and tributes to the victims of 1956.
